Why do I need to flavor medications with FLAVORx flavors if most medications already come flavored?
Flavored and palatable are two different things. FLAVORx makes medication palatable in a range of flavors from which a child can choose. When a child chooses their favorite flavor, they are mentally more prepared to take a medication because they had a voice in the process. Even medications like Amoxicillin are candidates for flavoring. You’d be amazed at how many kids prefer grape or strawberry over bubblegum. FLAVORx recipes are designed to override the existing taste of a medication for maximum compliance. Also, a service like flavoring is what builds customer loyalty to your pharmacy. By offering to help your patients improve their compliance, you are offering them a solution to improve their healthcare.
How do we flavor a medication if it already comes with a flavor in it?
Our recipes are designed to completely mask the existing flavor from the manufacturer without affecting the efficacy of the drug.
Do FLAVORx flavorings alter the effectiveness of or change the strength of a drug or medicine?
The addition of FLAVORx does not affect the stability or efficacy of a medication. We regularly conduct ongoing Ph, Compatibility, Organoleptic, and stability studies. To ensure that there are no interactions with our flavors and new drugs, tests show that FLAVORx does not impact the stability of medicines. To date, and over 60 million prescriptions later we have never received any client reports of a negative interaction.
When medicine tastes good, is there a risk of a child taking too much?
Our goal at FLAVORx is to make medicines more palatable so that children will take them, but not to make medicines flavored with FLAVORx taste like candy. We were supported by the American Poison Control Centers on this notion. It is still recommended to always keep medicines out of the reach of children and in a lock-top container.
Is FLAVORx flavors used only for children's medications?
No. The problem of administering unpalatable medicine is not unique to children. Many adults, including elderly patients, have similar problems. For this reason, there are many medications listed in the FLAVORx Formulary geared toward adult and geriatric patients. There is also a Veterinary System available that allows companion pets to get medicine treated with their favorite flavor like Grilled Tuna or Red Angus Beef.
When there is a lack of compliance in pediatric patients, isn't it really a discipline problem?
Not in the majority of cases. Many medications taste unpleasant and children can have up to 100 times more taste buds than adults. When a child gags and throws up his medicine, it is an intense taste issue rather than a discipline problem. Drugs are made to help people get better but if a drug cannot be ingested it will not become bio-available.
